Wat is tokenisatie eigenlijk?<\/h2>\n\n

Even terug naar de basis. Tokenisatie betekent dat je een echt bezit, zoals een gebouw, een obligatie of een aandeel, omzet in een digitaal token op een blockchain. Zo’n token vertegenwoordigt een deel van het onderliggende bezit. Je kunt het makkelijker verhandelen, opsplitsen en verplaatsen dan het fysieke ding zelf.<\/p>\n\n

Denk aan vastgoed. Normaal koop je een pand of je koopt niks. Met tokenisatie kun je in principe een klein stukje bezitten, net zoals je een aandeel in een bedrijf koopt. Dat maakt grote, moeilijk verhandelbare bezittingen een stuk toegankelijker en sneller uitwisselbaar.<\/p>\n\n

Waarom juist Saoedi-Arabi\u00eb?<\/h2>\n\n

Tether start in Saoedi-Arabi\u00eb met institutioneel vastgoed, en wil daarna doorgroeien naar andere soorten bezittingen. Dat is geen toevallige keuze. Het land steekt fors geld in het verbreden van zijn economie, weg van alleen olie. Digitale financi\u00eble infrastructuur en technologie passen precies in dat plaatje.<\/p>\n\n

Voor Tether is het een manier om verder te groeien dan alleen stablecoins. Het bedrijf werkt hiervoor samen met lokale partners om de tokenisatie op poten te zetten. De aankondiging loopt via Hadron, het platform van Tether dat bedrijven en instellingen helpt om bezittingen op een blockchain te zetten. Tokenisatie van echte bezittingen, in vakjargon “real world assets”, geldt al een tijd als een van de grootste beloftes van blockchain buiten pure crypto. Grote financi\u00eble partijen kijken er met interesse naar, omdat het processen sneller en goedkoper kan maken die nu nog traag en papieren zijn.<\/p>\n\n

Dat Tether daar nu vol op inzet, is veelzeggend. Het bedrijf verdient zijn geld vooral met stablecoins, digitale dollars die je waarde stabiel houden. Maar met deze stap laat het zien dat het ook een rol wil spelen in de bredere infrastructuur van digitale bezittingen.
