Banken en blockchain klinken voor veel mensen nog als water en vuur. Aan de ene kant staat de wereld van strenge regels, klantgegevens en toezichthouders. Aan de andere kant een netwerk waarop in principe iedereen alles kan meelezen. Toch komen die twee werelden steeds dichter bij elkaar. Deze week werd bekend dat de Ethereum Foundation een aparte club afsplitst, EthSystems geheten, die precies dat probleem wil oplossen: blockchain bruikbaar maken voor banken, met privacy als speerpunt.<\/p>\n

Wat is EthSystems precies?<\/h2>\n

Een spinout is een bedrijf dat wordt afgesplitst van een grotere organisatie, in dit geval de Ethereum Foundation. De Foundation is de non-profit die het Ethereum-netwerk ondersteunt en meehelpt aan de ontwikkeling ervan. EthSystems gaat als eigen entiteit verder en richt zich op \u00e9\u00e9n duidelijke doelgroep: financi\u00eble instellingen zoals banken.<\/p>\n

De inzet is technologie die transacties op een blockchain priv\u00e9 kan houden. Je kunt dat een beetje zien als een raam met matglas. Er is nog steeds licht, je weet dat er iets gebeurt en dat het klopt, maar je kunt niet zomaar naar binnen kijken. Voor banken is dat cruciaal, want zij mogen klantgegevens niet zomaar op een openbaar netwerk zetten.<\/p>\n

Waarom is privacy zo belangrijk voor banken?<\/h2>\n

Het openbare karakter van Ethereum is voor gewone gebruikers vaak juist een pluspunt. Iedereen kan controleren dat er niet vals wordt gespeeld. Maar voor een bank is dat een dealbreaker. Stel je voor dat een concurrent precies kan zien welke bedragen jouw klanten verschuiven. Dat kan simpelweg niet.<\/p>\n

Daarom is er behoefte aan een tussenweg. Transacties die wel op Ethereum draaien, met alle betrouwbaarheid en controleerbaarheid van dien, maar waarbij de gevoelige details afgeschermd blijven. Lukt dat, dan wordt het voor grote financi\u00eble partijen ineens een stuk aantrekkelijker om \u00fcberhaupt met deze technologie aan de slag te gaan. Een grote schudding bij de Ethereum Foundation<\/h2>\n

De afsplitsing komt niet uit de lucht vallen. Volgens de bron gebeurt dit tijdens een van de grootste reorganisaties bij de Ethereum Foundation in jaren. Er verandert dus veel achter de schermen. Dat klinkt spannend, en dat is het ook, maar het is niet per se slecht nieuws.<\/p>\n

Je kunt het vergelijken met een groot bedrijf dat een afdeling zelfstandig maakt, zodat die zich volledig op \u00e9\u00e9n markt kan storten. De Foundation blijft zich richten op het netwerk zelf, terwijl EthSystems de vrijheid krijgt om aan te kloppen bij banken en verzekeraars. Voor beide kan dat werken: focus in plaats van alles onder \u00e9\u00e9n dak.<\/p>\n

Wat kun je hieruit meenemen?<\/h2>\n

Voor de gewone Ethereum-gebruiker verandert er op korte termijn weinig. Je wallet blijft werken zoals je gewend bent. Maar op de langere termijn is dit een interessant signaal. Als grote financi\u00eble instellingen op Ethereum gaan bouwen, groeit het gebruik van het netwerk. En hoe meer serieuze partijen meedoen, hoe volwassener het hele ecosysteem wordt.<\/p>\n

Tegelijk is het goed om nuchter te blijven. Banken bewegen langzaam, en een plan is nog geen product. Dat privacytechnologie klaarligt, betekent niet automatisch dat de grote namen morgen instappen.
